It was my freshman year in high school, and I am watching John Elway tear up the NFL. This guy is amazing....making plays all over the field, coming from behind to WIN. I was in love with Elway and how he played the game. I pulled out Sports Illustrated and looked up Elway to see where he came from, finding out the he went to Stanford. I said to myself, I want to play at Stanford, and in that moment my life took an amazing turn for the positive.
Now, keep in mind, at the time, I am about 5'10", and I live in Fargo, ND. Nothing against Fargo, but it's iced over most of the year... how am I going to go from this unknown football market to QB U? Does this sound far fetched?
Well, that is where my story comes in, and I want to share it with you so that you too can make your collegiate dreams a reality. I pulled out some paper, since computers were limited, and wrote down my goal:
I am going to Stanford University with a full-ride scholarship to play football.
Then I read that GOAL every night before I went to bed, and I would fall asleep visualizing myself playing at Stanford. I knew it was going to happen I just didn't know how.
Then one day my mom calls me from Denver, CO, and she says, "Hey Chris, the news was on, and I heard that Elway will be in Stanford doing a football camp for QBs. Do you want to go?"
Well, You guessed it I said "Are you kidding, of course! Thanks Mom!"
I made it to Stanford the summer between my sophomore and junior year. I was around the big boys who had amazing talent and I was performing well. This left me inspired and helped get me through my junior year of high school.
After camp, I came back to Fargo, and I wrote down my goals for my junior season.
We were State Champions
We didn't lose a game in two seasons
I am 1st Team All-State
I am First Team All-Conference
Again, I would read these goals every night before I went to bed, and I would visualize myself achieving my goals. At Fargo South, I had a tremendous supporting cast and I was able to achieve my goals thanks the the teams hard work but most importantly I was extremely dedicated to achieving my goals.
At the end of my junior season, I pulled all the game film together and made a highlight reel. I then took my transcript and athletic resume packaged them together and sent them to schools all over the country in hopes of a favorable response.. I didn't have to wait too long until the letters and questionnaires started to flow in from schools across the country. I did my part and sat back and waited to see what happened.
Nebraska, Minnesota and Stanford were the three schools I went to for their football camp. This was an amazing experience for me, and it opened a TON of doors for my future. After these camps, I had created scholarship opportunities at all 3 of these schools and many others.
At the start of my senior year, I created yet another batch of videos for coaches from around the country. The coaches that liked what they saw, responded, and before long I had several "official recruiting" visits set up. The first recruiting visit I went on was to Stanford University.
Coach Dennis Green offered me a Scholarship to attend Stanford, I said, "YES!!!" Inside I was SCREAMING with EXCITEMENT from my scholarship offer to Stanford University, and that is a VERY BRIEF OVERVIEW of how an undersized QB from Fargo, ND got a full-ride scholarship to Stanford University. Remember these 3 things I did and hopefully they will help you:
1. Write down your goals
2. Find the football camps at the schools your are interested in to see if they feel the same way
3. Highlight films are a absolute must these days, so get yours together and get it out to the coaches at your preferred schools
I wish I could go back and do it all over again but I can't so I want to pay it forward and help other players out there with their dream of playing sports in college by teaching you
